In Ocho Rios, a port town on the north coast of the island, Jamaica Inn lies on a hidden-away sandy cove, with eight acres of tropical grounds. The hotel has been run by the same family for more than half a century. There’s a beach bar for casual pizzas and barbecued dishes, as well as the smarter Terrace Restaurant, which hosts regular reggae nights.

Guests can choose between private cottages, Suite 21, which occupies its own peninsula, and bungalows on the beachfront – views of the Caribbean come as standard. The rooms all have a screen-free policy, with no televisions, radios or even clocks. It’s likely that you won’t notice, since the surroundings provide a spectacular show.
